New Technology Smart Cities

The increasing deployment of sensors and hand-held electronics in recent years is giving way to a new approach to the study of the built environment. New technologies are unlocking massive streams of data about cities and their residents as cities continue to grow larger and more rapidly. In this interview, research director of the Institute for the Future Anthony Townsend discusses the concept of smart cities and the impact and potential impact of new technology on cities and public institutions, sharing his prognoses for the future of these civic laboratories.
