The financial and economic crisis has sparked a shakeout in the private-equity industry, putting 20 to 40 percent of the largest firms at risk. Investors in these firms—themselves facing a severe liquidity crisis—will play a significant role in who stays, who goes, and how the industry evolves. We explore investors’ ability to meet commitments, the vulnerability of 20 of the largest private-equity firms to investors’ default, and how investors are expected to gain power and drive major change.
